Name: Karthick Babu Sai Sankar Gupta
Age: 31
Company: Leiden University, LIC/SSNMR/NMR-Afdeling
How long have you been living in the Netherlands?
Almost 5 years, to be more precise it is 4 yrs and 10 months.
What brought you to the Netherlands initially?
I knew the Leiden University before coming here. Research subjects and facilities were very well established in the university. All the people in Netherlands understand English, which makes good communication possible. Moreover, in 2006, the government also were encouraging knowledge migrants (kennis migrant), which helped to speed up the procedure for an intake at the university . The pay scale is also good.
What is your profession?
Research assistant (AIO)
What is the main difference between your country of origin and the Netherlands?
I come from India, which is another continent in itself. Hence this list can go on forever. Here, I would like to take the privilege to mention my point of view of things instead of the other usual topics such as temperature, traditions etc.
Netherlands | India |
- Time is money | - Time is god |
- To make sure to talk about oneself to others | - To make sure that others talk about oneself |
- Consider food just for living | - Consider food as something to enjoy |
- Saying “No” means one knows his priorities | - Saying “No” means one is incapable of doing things |
- Saying “yes” means already confirming the promise | - Saying “yes” means just agreeing to discussions |
- Meeting: Agenda is so important | - Meeting: Anything at anytime |
- Parents teach their children independence especially by sending them away from home during their studies where they learn to buy instant/fast foods and spend more money | - Parents make sure of the same thing by asking their children to participate in daily activities at home and to take care of their money |
- Proud to be straight-forward | - Proud to be polite |
- Gossip: list of famous destinations such as vacation plans and tours | - Gossip: list of famous destinations in bollywood movies and talk about the styles and fashions of hero and heroine |
- Customer/ Consumer is left with no choices in shops | - Customer/ Consumer is treated like a King in shops |
- Appointment means “on” time | - Appointment means “around” that time |
What was the most surprising adjustment you had to make when moving to the Netherlands?
- To smile only at people I know (back in India it’s common to smile at any person that passes by).
- Shops closing at the same times as offices do.
- Vegetarian menus are just salad and sauce with boiled potatoes and eggs. (The rice was missing, here people consider rice or potatoes, in india we are used to menus with rice and potatoes)
- To get used to sleeping on winter nights (especially when the land lady puts off the room heating to save energy), appreciating hot water bottles instead of room heaters.
What would you miss most about the Netherlands if you were to leave tomorrow?
- Cycling.
- Clean environment and locality.
- Quality of things in markets.
- Corruption free administrations.
What do you like the least about the Netherlands?
Wind, Rain and Cracking jokes about others in the name of speaking directly.
How would you describe the Dutch people?
Dutch people are good people and have giant features, are very healthy, tall and huge and still only have around 4 sandwiches for lunch. They love their coffee breaks and borrels. Start the day early for lab exactly 17.30 leaving the lab. They really have very few wishes, most of them are satisfied with what they have but still complain, but then I understand that they are simply proud of it because they don’t get lost in those complaints. They are very adventurous in trying new things, especially with food. When I mention that it could be more spicy then they are more tempted to try that food. Ready to discuss anything openly, whether they agree or not but ready to listen ideas and opinions of others. They are very proud of proposing statements “Stellingen”. No discrimination in welcoming and encouraging any ideas from any person, as long as those benefit the team work. They have their own expressive styles. The thing I like best is when they do the hand waving near the ear, while enjoying their food, saying “lekker lekker”. If they like somebody, they will try their best to help them by giving many suggestions and tips to enjoy living here. They are inspiring in making plans and ways of executing them. Lastly, I want to thank all and mention that my living here has even made a few Dutch friends a little jealous of me and my wife naveena, because being foreigner for some reason, has resulted in many people supporting us in various ways to make us feel at home.
